Another good rating for ‘excellent’ Shrewsbury care home
Residents at a Shrewsbury care home told government inspectors they felt safe and well cared for in their surroundings when they visited last month.
Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission visited The Ferns Residential Home on Longden Road and found that the home was safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led and gave it a good rating.
The 36-bed home offers help with personal care.
In the CQC report, inspectors said that staff at the home, which was previously rated as good, were well supported and were aware of what they needed to do to reduce any risks to the residents.
They also found that the residents were supported in making choices and maintaining control of their lives. They were supported by staff who had received training relevant to their roles and new staff had undergone the necessary checks prior to their appointment.
Inspectors also found that residents received food their enjoyed, their medicines were well managed and they were supported to access healthcare professionals should they need to do so.
The inspector said: "People said staff treated them with kindness and compassion and they felt involved in their own care. Staff respected people's dignity and privacy and supported them to keep their independence.
"People continued to receive care that was personal to them because staff knew what their individual preferences and needs were. People told us they received their care when the needed it and were not kept waiting by staff.
"People lived in a home where they felt confident to express themselves and felt comfortable to speak with staff and managers about concerns or issues that affected them. The provider encouraged people and their relatives to give their opinions of the home through surveys and feedback forms."
One resident told inspectors: "I used to fall at home so I came here. I have not fallen once since living here. I have improved my confidence because the staff help me to walk. I feel very safe now."
Another said: "I was very lucky to get a place in this home. I had heard about its excellent reputation and now I am here, I agree with it."
A third resident said: "I have been in four other places, this is the best home I have been in, I am so happy."
