Kitten found at Shrewsbury kennels

They thought they saw a pussy cat – and they were right.

Woody's spot under the biomass boiler was not the "purr-fect" place for him to stay

Staff at the Dogs Trust in Shrewsbury are more used to dealing with puppies than kittens.

So they were very surprised when a stray was found hiding under its biomass boiler.

Staff at the centre couldn’t believe what they were seeing - and hearing - as they prepared to take their homeless hounds out for the last walk of the day on May 31.

Amongst the sounds of excited dogs barking, carer Katie Lander thought she heard meowing and when she went to investigate, she discovered a shivering kitten hiding under the rehoming centre’s biomass boiler.

She said “It was such a tiny sound amidst the barking but it stood out and I’m so glad I heard it. I saw two eyes staring out at me. He was so scared but I managed to coax him towards me and picked him up.

"Our vet checked him over and then we gave him some food and water. As we had no luck tracing his owners I’ve been looking after him and I’m glad to say he has now fully recovered and is as playful and cheeky as you’d hope he’d be.”

The eight-week-old kitten, named Woody by Katie having been found under the biomass boiler which is fuelled by wood pellets, isn’t microchipped and nobody has come forward to claim him.

Katie addeD: “I have fallen in love with him so if his owner can’t be traced I will be adopting him and he will share his home with my other rescue cat, two rescue dogs, a tortoise and a rabbit, all of whom he gets on brilliantly with."

The latest furry finding comes just weeks after the rehoming centre’s veterinary nurse found a ferret by the side of the road on her way home who was adopted by another member of staff after his owner couldn’t be traced.

Anyone who believes they are Woody’s owner should call the centre on 0300 303 0292.
