A faulty engine is believed to have caused the fire which also damaged a nearby bus shelter on Springfield Way at 5am yesterday morning.

When the fire crew arrived they found the blue saloon car was completely engulfed by flames.

A spokeswoman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to Springfield Way at 5.20am. We sent one fire engine to the scene.

"The car was completely destroyed and it is believed the fire was caused by a fault in the engine. A nearby bus shelter was also damaged by the heat of the fire. We used two breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to tackle the fire."

Eyewitness Sian Yeomans-Jones was woken by the noise of the fire.

She said: "It was on fire when we got up. No one was hurt although a man nearly was when he went back to get his mobile phone. It seems that something in the car exploded and we were woken up by the shouting as people got out."
