Raw sewage runs down Shrewsbury's Castle Gates

Raw sewage leaked from a drain cover on one of Shrewsbury’s busiest roads - which led to traffic spraying passers by with foul smelling muck.

The fault, on the castle side of Castle Gates, was reported to Severn Trent who sent workmen out to deal with the problem.

Mark Andrews, a resident who lives at a flat nearby, said raw sewage had begun pouring out of the drains under the sign for Shrewsbury Castle after 1pm.

He said: “The street is now covered in excrement and buses are driving by splashing it onto passers by.

“This has been a problem for the past 18 months but nothing seems to happen about it and public health is being put at risk.”

A Severn Trent spokesman said: “The flooded drain was reported to us and our engineers were on site to investigate what caused the problem.

“We’re sorry for any inconvenience this caused and we worked as quickly as we can to fix the issue and get everything back.”
