Record baskets keep Shrewsbury in bloom

A record breaking 299 hanging baskets have been purchased by shops and businesses as a town gears up for this year's In Bloom competition.

Shrewsbury Town Council has sold more baskets than eve before, to all manner of establishments, it as been revealed as Shrewsbury bids to uphold its heritage as a "town of flowers".

A dedicated workforce at the town council’s nursery at Weeping Cross have spent months preparing thousands of flowers to make the town’s streets and open spaces a floral masterpiece, Shrewsbury In Bloom committee chairman, Councillor Keith Roberts, said.

He said: "The hanging baskets are a great way of enhancing the town for visitors and residents.

“This year we have received orders for, and hung outside a variety of establishments, an amazing 299 hanging baskets, which Shrewsbury Town Council water, feed and maintain during the summer months."

He said the council charges local businesses and shops £45.00 per basket, which includes delivery, maintenance and disposal at the end of the season.

“During the current economic climate I am thrilled at the response of traders and shop owners within Shrewsbury for the hanging baskets which enhance our beautiful town’s appearance" he added.

“These baskets and planters, together with the privately purchased hanging baskets, really make a difference to the visual appeal of the town. They engender a sense of pride, and encourage visitors to return to Shrewsbury time and time again.”
