Girl, 14, airlifted to hospital with very serious leg injuries after being hit by car on Shrewsbury's Mytton Oak Road
A 14-year-old girl has been airlifted to a specialist hospital after suffering very serious leg injuries when she was hit by a car in Mytton Oak Road in Shrewsbury.
The elderly woman car driver is believed to have suffered a heart attack at the wheel.
The accident happened outside Boots the Chemist and the Co-op store at about 5pm yesterday afternoon after a silver Peugeot crashed through a set of traffic lights and knocked over a bollard.
The driver of the car was treated at the scene for a possible heart attack.
West Midlands Ambulance Service received numerous calls to the incident. An ambulance that was taking a patient into hospital came across the crash shortly after it had happened. Two further ambulances and a paramedic manager were sent to the scene.
After emergency treatment at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, the girl was airlifted to a specialist children's hospital in Liverpool for further care.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival, ambulance staff found a 14-year-old girl with very severe injuries to both legs and her pelvis.
“Nearby a car had come to rest against a green BT phone exchange box. Nearby a set of traffic lights and a bollard had been knocked over.
“Due to the proximity to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, the crew spent only 12 minutes on scene before leaving for the hospital with the girl.
“The Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford with a MERIT doctor and critical care paramedic on board had also been sent to the incident and went straight to the hospital.
“The girl’s condition was stabilised in A&E before she was airlifted to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool for specialist care.
“The elderly woman car driver was assessed at the scene and was treated for a possible heart attack and taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
“Thanks to the private non-emergency ambulance crew who stopped to assist at the scene.”
A full investigation has now been launched and police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the accident or who may have seen the vehicle before the incident happened.
The accident happened on the same road that 11-year-old Olivia-Violet Reeves was killed on June 15 when she was hit by a grey 4x4 while walking to a bus stop.
