Shrewsbury river rescue: Police in warning about drinking and swimming
Police have warned of the dangers of swimming and socialising near water, after a man fell into the River Severn.
The man fell into the water in Shrewsbury late on Tuesday night.
Although he was able to pull himself to safety, three fire engines and an ambulance were sent to the scene in Chester Street.
Inspector Ed Hancox from Shrewsbury Police said: "The River Severn is extremely dangerous, even at low summer levels.
"Shrewsbury has seen a number of tragic deaths in the river over the past few years and officers are working with partner agencies such as Shropshire Fire and Rescue and the RNLI to spread the message that it is not safe to swim in, and especially not while under the influence of drink or drugs."
Chief Inspector Alison Davies said: “Caution should always be taken when enjoying sports on the water but also when socialising nearby as while bodies of water may look safe they can hide dangers such as hidden currents and hazardous objects. There is also the ever present risk of cold water shock."
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the area at around 11.35pm by passers-by who had seen the man in the water.
Three fire crews including the water rescue unit were sent from Baschurch and Shrewsbury.
Alexa Neville, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said: “At approximately 11.35pm on Tuesday West Mercia Police received a call from members of the public who had seen a man in the river at Chester Street in Shrewsbury.
“Officers attended and the man was located nearby. He was intoxicated and had an injury to the shin. He was taken to The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
“We would like to thank the individuals that reported their concerns to the police so that quick action could be taken to ensure the man was safe."
“The police helicopter had been called to support the search.”
West Midland Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The patient was walking around but was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for precautionary measures and for further checks."
