Artist rolls globe though home town

It made a strange site, a woman walking along the streets of Shrewsbury rolling a 50kg copper globe armed with cameras.

But for Janetka Platun, it was the realisation of a dream to bring her art to the streets of her home town.

The 46-year-old artist, who grew up in Bayston Hill but now lives in London, visited Shrewsbury last weekend.

Her ball, which she tenderly refers to as 'Globe', is part of a three year art project in collaboration with

Queen Mary University in London, the Royal Geographical Society, the National Maritime Museum and Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery.

Prior to her visit to Shrewsbury, she has rolled the globe around East London and is set to take it to Delhi in India.

"My work is about home and belonging," said Janetka. "People come up to me in the street when they see Globe and I am able to ask them how they feel about where they live and what it means to belong.

"It is very different to me standing in a street with a clipboard asking people to give me their answers.

"Mostly they would avoid me but with Globe they are more than happy to interact.

"There are cameras mounted in four portholes on Globe which record footage. This will then be edited and used to produce a short film which will be shown at Shrewsbury Museum. It is very important for me to be able to show the results in the town where I spent 15 years of my life."
