Builders have moved in to Shrewsbury Club on Sundorne Road and have begun work to remodel the changing rooms, swimming pool, reception area and gym.

The car parking area is also being enlarged and landscaped.

Work is on schedule and all of the remodelling, including the draining, re-grouting and re-tiling of the swimming pool as well as the building of a new extension, will be completed by Christmas.

Alvin Ward, general manager of the Shrewsbury Club said: "The builders are on schedule after the first week. We are extending the pool hall so that we can offer a 12 person vitality pool as well as the existing pool. In the existing pool hall we are completely redecoration and re-tiling around the pool. We will also take the opportunity to empty the pool and replace the tiles on the floor and re-grout as necessary.

"The pool will be closed for around five weeks from September 25 to October 30. The extension will not be completed until Christmas and the pool may have to close again for a few days while we knock through the extension. There will be a new lighting scheme and we think all members will see a great transformation.

"The changing rooms will be completely stripped and refitted with new showers, sanitary ware, cubicles, tiling, flooring and lighting.

"We are creating a new entrance to the club as well as a new virtual spin studio. The gym will also be redecorated."

Mr Ward said that work on the new car park would mean spaces for another 80 people to park.

He said: "We are already well underway with the extension to the car park. The new car park should give us an extra 80 spaces which should more than make up for the loss of the overflow car park.

"Coincidentally, the work to build houses on the overflow car park has also commenced. This piece of land was sold last year by the previous owners and have been going through the planning process. We do not envisage that there will be much disruption caused by this work.

"We are very confident that the new facilities we can all enjoy once complete will be worth it."
