Volunteers being sought by charity

A Shropshire charity is on the lookout for volunteers to help the service run smoothly.

Age UK Shropshire Telford and Wrekin (Age UK STW) is putting plans in place for a fresh intake of volunteers in Shrewsbury.

Befrienders are needed across the town, and day centre helpers in Monkmoor, Harlescott, Castlefields and Hanwood.

The charity is also looking for receptionists at its Mardol Gardens headquarters, along with van drivers, drivers’ mates and retail assistants for its donated furniture shop in Riverside Mall, and minibus drivers for Age Concern Shrewsbury to transport Age UK’s members to and from its day centres on weekdays.

Age UK STW chief executive, Heather Osborne, said: “The befriending role suits friendly, practical people with good listening skills. Befrienders typically spend a couple of hours a week visiting an older local person in their own home, for companionship and conversation. They may also take them out and about to build confidence.

“Receptionists need to be confident communicators who enjoy being part of a busy team. The role also requires admin experience and computer skills gained in an office environment.

“Day centre helpers work as a team one day a week to set things up and clear up, socialise with members, and serve refreshments. They also help organise activities and outings.

“Training and ongoing support is provided for all volunteers to ensure they are happy and confident in their roles. This includes Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (MiDAS) training for Age Concern’s minibus drivers.”

If you would like to become part of the Age UK STW family by sparing anything from a couple of hours a week by volunteering your time, please contact Janice or Claire, Age UK STW volunteer recruiters, on 01743 588 570.
