Shrewsbury's night time economy could be boosted if a new 24-hour taxi rank gets the go-ahead.

A consultation is underway to ask the public if they would like to see a new taxi rank in Abbey Foregate.

Previously there had been taxi offices in the area, housed in wooden buildings, which have now been demolished.

The area is a firm fixture on Shrewsbury's night time entertainment scene and is now home to the popular C21 nightclub and a number of restaurants, including The Peach Tree, MomoNoKi and Gino's.

Now Shropshire Council is considering installing a 24 hour taxi rank on the south-east side of the Abbey Foregate Loop Road.

They claim it will improve the amenities by increasing both the day and night time taxi rank availability and will also help to enhance the night time economy.

As part of the consultation, which opened on November 9, double yellow lines would be installed on the north side of Abbey Foregate, from The Narrows, in an easterly direction, and will make the waiting restrictions in the area consistent, yet still allow for unrestricted loading and unloading.

All the measures are part of The Shrewsbury Integrated Transport Package, specifically “Key Junction Improvements at Abbey Foregate”.

Full details of the proposals can be found in documents which can be viewed during usual office opening hours at the Shirehall, Abbey Foregate, or at Shrewsbury Library, Castle Gates.

Alternatively people can see them at shropshire.gov.uk/traffic

People wishing to raise an objection, express support, or make any other comments about the proposals can send an e-mail to traffic.engineering@shropshire.gov.uk or ring 0345 678 9006.

The consultation ends on November 30.
