Shrewsbury train fire sees platform evacuated
An investigation is underway after a suspected fire involving a train at Shrewsbury Railway Station.
A train was evacuated on platform seven of the railway station on Castle Foregate at around 9.17am after smoke was seen coming from beneath the carriage.
Fire alarms were set off and passengers were asked to get off the 6.28am Holyhead to Cardiff train.
A spokesman for Arriva Trains Wales said no-one had been injured and no smoke had got into the train carriages.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was believed to have involved an alternator underneath the train.
However, a spokesman for Arriva said engineers had been sent to the station to speak with the fire service and investigate the cause of the fire.
Two fire engines were sent to the railway station to deal with the incident and they used breathing equipment and a hose reel to extinguish the blaze.
They had completed their work by around 9.30am.
A spokesman for Arriva Trains Wales said: "Fire alarms were activated while passengers were on the train and they were evacuated. There were no injuries.
"Platform 7 has been cleared of passengers."
The platform was closed following the incident.
The station remained open despite the fire although Arriva said that some passengers would face minor delays.
No trains were cancelled other than the train involved in the incident.
It is the second incident at the railway station in recent months.
In November the entire railway station was evacuated after a fire involving an Arriva Trains Wales train.
A total of 12 fire crews were sent to tackle the incident where flames had been seen coming from underneath a carriage.
At the time Arriva said that a train had "experienced a technical problem resulting in smoke being emitted from the engine".
