Old BT cabinet serving Shrewsbury's busiest shopping street
One of the county's longest streets of independent shops is being served by an old BT cabinet and a resident has said it is "shocking" that it has not been replaced.
Owain Betts is a communications consultant who works from his home which is near the cabinet at the top of Wyle Cop in Shrewsbury.
The 45-year-old said that "Cabinet 18", as he has dubbed it, is one of the closest cabinets to the BT Exchange on Town Walls, and fibre broadband will be passing right past it.
"I lived on Coton Hill for about a year and there I could get 80Mb, compared to just 17Mb in the centre of town" he added.
"It's one of the longest streets of independent stores, it would really make a difference to the shop owners and residents.
"I work from home a lot and want to utilise the internet, but the connection has been intermittent, it's a very poor service.
"I was quite surprised to see how bad the connection is.
"It's just been very frustrating and I'm really not getting anywhere.
"From a business perspective there must be lost of businesses which would really benefit from fibre broadband.
"BT has said there is no plans to upgrade the cabinet at the moment and to keep an eye on the website."
A spokeswoman for Openreach, the business responsible for the telephone and broadband network, said they are investigating.
