Not such an egg-cellent idea

A driver got in a flap when his heavy goods vehicle got stuck on a single track private lane after following his sat nav.

The lorry, carrying 6,000 laying chickens, was en route to a farm on Isle Lane, Bicton near Shrewsbury but was inadvertently directed down a narrow private drive which was not designed for HGV traffic.

With no way out and unable to turn around, the driver had to reverse back in to an area used as a fisherman's car park where he became stuck.

Richard Llewellyn, who owns the land, said: "We were somewhat bemused when the driver asked if he could borrow a spade. There was no way a 40 tonne lorry was budging. Two tractors appeared on the scene and of course they got nowhere. Shropshire Automotive came to the rescue and some time later two tow trucks arrived.

"With a walled garden on one side and a telegraph pole to navigate by the whole saga took over five hours, fortunately the birds were quiet and still and did not appear stressed.

"This is one of several occasions in which an HGV has been directed down to us, usually it is the sat nav that directs them down here when actually it is the other side of the river they are trying to get to. So HGV drivers double check where you are heading in future, look for landmarks, use an OS map. Now the clean up begins."
