High street retailer to open new store
The date has been set for the final High Street store to move out of the Riverside Shopping Centre in Shrewsbury.
Wilko will quit the centre on June 23 before relocating to the nearby Pride Hill Shopping Centre at the start of July.
The company has signed a lease for its new store at the shopping centre.
The new 10,000 square ft store will take over the lower level space formerly occupied by C&A.
Sean Toal, Wilko chief operating officer said: “We are delighted to have signed the lease at Pride Hill Shopping Centre and can’t wait to open our doors in July.
“The shopping centre is in a fantastic location, with great transport links and a park and ride, and we’re sure it will become the go-to place for locals looking to stock up on products for their homes and gardens for years to come.”
Founded in 1930 as Wilkinson Stores by J K Wilkinson, Wilko is one of the UK’s largest retailers.
Its move from the Riverside leaves the centre, which is under threat of demolition, with no 'big name' retailers.
Shropshire Council's leader Councillor Peter Nutting has said the centre should be levelled and car parking and a new leisure facility, which a possible hotel, bars and restaurants built in its place.
