Shrewsbury Town hoping for sweet taste of victory

Businesses all over Shrewsbury are supporting the town's football club ahead of tomorrow's play-off at Wembley - including one of the newest shops.

Planet Doughnut has created a limited edition blue and amber treat which will be on sale today.

The shop opened in Claremont Hill last month after being established as a home-based delivery business late last year.

The owner, Duncan McGregor, 38, said: "We created the first batch on Thursday and sold them off quite quickly to Shrewsbury Town fans, so we've decided to make some more.

"It's a limited edition doughnut which took us about two hours to make the few we made.

"My brother-in-law is a big Shrewsbury Town fan so is going down to Wembley, and our store is closed on Sundays so we will be watching the game on the telly.

"We've been given Shrewsbury Town flags so will have those out at the weekend too."

Mr McGregor runs the business with his wife Sam, 30.

He added: "It's been really steadily busy since we opened, we've had a lot of support from local businesses, it's been really nice and steady.

"We get a lot of suggestions from customers and take them on board.

"If there's a big event on we might consider making more limited edition doughnuts.

"We're independent so we can really take ideas on board and do what we want to do."

The new limited edition Shrewsbury Town FC doughnuts will be sold for £2.50 each of three for £7.

Earlier this week Roger Groves and Mike Davis from the supporters’ parliament headed into the town to distribute banners to businesses in a bid to fill as many of the allocated Wembley seats as possible.

Asda, Salop Leisure, Salop Computer Centre and Tesco Extra were among businesses to display a banner.

And the Salopian Bar is decorated ahead of tomorrow, when it is expected to be packed with fans watching the big game.

For those actually taking the trip to Wembley, the company that sponsors Shrewsbury Town’s ground is supplying refreshments.

Paul Delves with some of the water being provided for fans

Fans travelling with Longmynd Travel tomorrow will all receive free drinks of water from Montgomery Water.

Paul Delves, director of the bottled water manufacturer, said he wanted to get involved in the big occasion.

“Longmynd Travel is putting on lots of buses to Wembley and we thought we would offer to supply bottled water for the supporters,” he said. “We’ve given them 2,000 bottles and if the weather stays hot and sunny, they’ll definitely be needing it.

“They are all the new bottles too, which are made from 50 per cent recycled plastic.”

The stadium was renamed Montgomery Waters Meadow in July 2017 after Salop ended its contract with Greenhous.

Mr Delves will be heading to Wembley to support his team.

“I’m really nervous and I just hope they can do it,” he said. “I’m a supporter but obviously since re-naming the stadium we have a real affinity with the club. The whole family are fans now.”

Longmynd Travel, which sponsors the training kit and supplies the team bus, is putting on 26 coaches. Val Sheppard-Evans, coach director, said they have been extra busy in the run-up to the play-off.

She added: “We’ve been completely snowed under taking bookings. We’ll be taking about 1,300 people and thanks to Paul, they will all be well hydrated.

“I’ll be going down too and I can’t wait. Let’s just hope they can win.”
