About 10,000 fans came to Montgomery Waters Meadow on Wednesday evening to see the 68-year-old superstar perform a string of hits including Endless Love, Hello and Dancing On The Ceiling.

Despite the rain, which started just before he stepped out on stage, fans were on their feet throughout the concert and police officers also joined in the dancing.

Queues had formed before the doors had even opened, with about 200 eager fans waiting to be let in at 4pm.

Shrewsbury Town's chief executive Brian Caldwell said: "It was a brilliant night.

"Despite the weather again, we were hit hard with the weather which wasn't forecast, but I thought Anastasia and Lionel were absolutely top drawer.

"The feedback we've had from those who have contacted us, and the stuff on social media, everybody's had a really good night and I thought the two of them were fantastic."

He said Lionel had made a joke of the weather, adding: "He got everyone really going and engaged with the audience.

"The place was absolutely rocking, it was fantastic to see.

"For me it's about trying to bring people to the stadium.

"Even if it makes us a little bit of money it's something else we can throw into the budget for next season."

He said it was good to work with Marshall Arts and praised staff who were involved with the concert.

Mr Caldwell said he would like the venue to host further concerts in the future, but said it was also important to secure the right headline act.

Sir Elton John and Sir Rod Stewart have both performed there before.

After the gig, Shrewsbury Police tweeted: "Great music helped by a friendly crowd. It's been great atmosphere 'all night long' with everyone singing and dancing."

A video of police officers dancing was also posted to Shrewsbury Police's Twitter page, along with the message: "When the only way to get the team warm is #JoiningIn."

The Grammy award-winning singer has been entertaining his fans for decades and has sold more than 100 million records worldwide.
