Flying the flag – Rock and Fountain landlord Carl Jones can’t wait for tomorrow’s big match against Panama, when his pub will be packed

A giant England flag has been draped over The Rock and Fountain pub in Castle Foregate.

Landlord Carl Jones is looking forward to a bumper weekend as locals pack in tomorrow to watch England’s second World Cup match against Panama.

Mr Jones, who took over as landlord from his father Robin Jones in November after 30 years, said: “Every time there’s a big England game on we put the flag up.

“It covers the majority of the pub at the front. I had it made by a family friend and it took her months to make.

“I’ve also got 5ft flags for every country that’s in the World Cup in the pub as we try and welcome everyone, so all fans can feel at home.

"England have a young team with not a lot of experience but if they can keep everyone fresh and fighting then hopefully they will surprise a lot of us.

“If they do win I was thinking about putting on a big free buffet and maybe £1 a pint for half an hour to celebrate, I’ve got lots of plans.

“We’ve got a good fan base here, people who come from all over Shrewsbury to the pub, we get all sorts of supporters here.”

Sales of beer are expected to double this weekend across England as pubs and supermarkets reap the benefits of the football and sunshine.
