It was a double for the winner, Paul Jones from Oswestry, running for Shrewsbury Athletic Club, who also won the Shrewsbury Half Marathon.

Second across the line was 17-year-old Jack Pickett, 17, from Ellesmere who runs for Wolverhampton with third Thomas Vaughan of Shrewsbury Shufflers.

First across the line in the women's race was Sarah Benson from Telford while second place went to Rachel Parker from Condover whose was disqualified despite coming second in the half marathon, because she ran in a different number.

"I was frustrated then as I wasn't even given a time, so it is great to have second place today," she said.

While the winners were receiving their medals hundreds of runners kept pouring over the line, greeted by their proud families.

Many were running for charity including a large group for the Shropshire based, Blue Sky Foundation.

The foundation was set up by the family and friends of Steve Newman from Shrewsbury after he died in November aged 50.

The money from the charity, includin the £2,500 raised from the 10k will go to research into leukaemia.

Step son Elliot Goode was running in the event along with son-in-law, Andrew Evans and other friends, including Chris Bradney who completed the tough course dressed as a pantomime dame. Stepdaughter, Olivia, son Myles and wife Sue, along with two year old granddaughter, Ffion, were among those supporting the event.

"I was sponsored more to put the outfit on," he said.

"It was incredibly hot and running in a wig was awful."

Also fundraising was Neil Jones from Harlescott, from the Team Isaac group raising money for the Children with Cancer charity, for Sonya and Gareth Jones, whose son Issac died from the disease.

Several local running clubs were in evidence at the run from Shropshire Shufflers to the Wrekin Runners on Oswestry Olympians.

There were also runners from new groups including the Welshpool based Dolly Mixtures, Mere Runners and the Oswestry based, Girls on the Run club.

Mary Thornton from Oswestry Olympians said: "It is great to have a town centre event, there was brilliant support all the way round, with people handing out water and even someone with a hosepipe spraying us down."

Husband and wife, Tracy and Steve Pryce from Kerry, Mid Wales, lined up together at the start but Tracey said: "He went ahead by the time we got to the Boathouse pub."

Cerys Williams from Oswestry 'Jeffed' her way around the 10k, a strategy of run/walking invented by ultra runner, Jeff Galloway.
