Train cancellations to hit Shropshire commuters as engineering works start

Rail users from Shropshire will face weeks of disruption while engineering works are carried out.

Later this month, Arriva Trains Wales services between Crewe and Manchester Piccadilly will be affected while lines are closed.

From Monday to September 27, overnight engineering work will see the 10.35pm train from Manchester to Shrewsbury diverted via an alternative route. A bus will run from Stockport to Crewe but there will be no connection service to Shrewsbury.

And anyone wanting to travel to the Welsh capital on weekends from the end of the month and throughout October will have to use buses which will take them part of the journey.

On the weekend of September 29 to October 1, engineering work will be carried out between Hereford, Knighton and Shrewsbury, closing all lines on Saturday and Sunday and until 4.15am on October 1.

Replacement buses will run between Shrewsbury and Knighton and also between Shrewsbury and Hereford.

On October 1, the 4.49am train from Shrewsbury to Llandrindod Wells will start from Knighton at 5.40am with a replacement bus running between Shrewsbury and Knighton.

The next weekend, from October 5-8, the work will again take place. On October 5, the Arriva Trains Wales 6.21pm train between Swansea and Shrewsbury will terminate at Knighton and a replacement bus service will run on to Shrewsbury. On October 6-7 replacement buses will run between Shrewsbury and Hereford and Knighton. On October 8 the 4.49am Shrewsbury to Llandrindod Wells train will also be affected.

Replacement

On the weekend of October 13-14, the lines between Shrewsbury and Newport/Knighton will be closed. Replacement buses will be running between Shrewsbury and Newport. Heart of Wales Line trains will be replaced by buses between Shrewsbury and Knighton.

From October 15 and on October 19 the Arriva Trains Wales service between Shrewsbury and Knighton will be affected due to engineering work.

Replacement buses will be operating between Shrewsbury and Knighton/Newport from October 20 until 6am on October 22. Replacement buses will run between Shrewsbury and Knighton and Shrewsbury and Newport and Shrewsbury and Welshpool.

There will be an amended overnight Arriva Trains Wales service between Shrewsbury and Crewe from October 22 to October 26.

From Monday to Thursday the 9.55pm train from Cardiff to Crewe will be diverted to run via Wrexham and Chester, extending journey times. A replacement bus service will run between Shrewsbury and Crewe via Nantwich.

Finally on October 28, engineering work will take place between Shrewsbury and Chester, closing all lines. As a result replacement buses will run between these stations all day.
