Cyclist killed as crash closes Shrewsbury road

A cyclist has died in a serious crash with a car in Shrewsbury.

Emergency services were called to Wenlock Road, near the Peacock Inn, at about 9pm yesterday.

A 30-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "Ambulance staff arrived to find a cyclist, a man, in cardiac arrest who was already being given CPR by those on scene.

"The team quickly took over emergency treatment and continued advanced life support at the scene. Sadly, despite the best efforts of everyone, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead a short time later."

Police, an ambulance, a paramedic officer, a community first responder were on scene.

The road was closed for several hours and police urged drivers to avoid the area.

A police spokeswoman added: "The cyclist a 30 year old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries are on-going and anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact West Mercia Police."
