The former Liberal Democrat MP and the party's first female chair will give a talk at the meeting, and the call for a 'people's vote' on the final Brexit deal will headline the agenda.

Baroness Burt was nominated to a peerage in 2015.

Her campaigning interests currently focus on Brexit, and she is a spokesperson for small businesses and women.

“Given the opportunity of a people's vote, more than half of the British people would now vote to remain within the EU,” said Baroness Burt.

“People voted in good faith but without being told the full facts of what Brexit would mean 3.3 million people who voted leave in 2015 would now vote to remain, many of them in the Shrewsbury and Atcham area.”

She added: ‘’We are standing on the precipice, and the British people are not lemmings.”

Shrewsbury and Atcham Liberal Democrat chairman Daniel Clark said: “We are thrilled Baroness Burt has accepted our invitation to the annual meeting. One of our priorities will be to pass a motion in support of a people’s vote in order to demonstrate solidarity for the campaign in the constituency.

“In addition, we will be addressing key local issues which are also of national concern including NHS funding, education cuts at a time when there is more demand from increases in local population, and the huge demand for social services for an ageing population."

The meeting will be held on Thursday at the United Reform Church’s lecture hall.
