Shrewsbury first responders get helping hand

Shrewsbury's first responders have been given some emergency help of their own, in the shape of a new vehicle.

The volunteers work alongside the ambulance service to give expert first aid to people in need in Shrewsbury and the surrounding countryside.

But the car used by the the team was on its last legs.

Vice chairman, Andy Davies, said: "We had a car very kindly donated to us and it served us well until it became unreliable. So we applied to the National Lottery and also to Morrisons supermarket community fund and amazingly we got a grant from both of them."

"Because of the area we cover and the fact that we might have to go down lanes or over fields, we opted for a four wheel drive vehicle and had a fantastic deal from TJ Vickers which has also given us sponsorship in the form of free servicing. We can't thank everyone enough."

Mr Davies said the first responders could use their own vehicle or book out the team vehicle.

"There are a number of us, all volunteers, who are able to respond to requests from the ambulance service to attend life threatening 999 calls. We can be on scene quickly and carry specialist equipment."
