Nathan Parish, 27, was sentenced to nine months in prison for assault, criminal damage, dangerous driving and drink driving.

Shrewsbury Crown Court heard Parish was at a friend's house on November 23 last year and they shared a box of wine.

Gerald Birmingham, prosecuting, said: "He went upstairs and lay on her bed. She followed him up and asked him to get off. That's when he grabbed her around the throat and pinned her against the wall.

"At the time he was holding a bottle of wine and struck her while screaming 'I'm going to kill you'."

The victim escaped to a friend's house and saw Parish, of Sabrina Court, Longden Coleham, in Shrewsbury, later that evening in a car park.

Mr Birmingham said he saw the victim and her two friends and ran at them with an iron bar.

He hit one of the women then got in his car and drove it towards them in an attempt to hit them.

Behaviour

"At about 3.30am the police arrived in the area," Mr Birmingham said. "They located Mr Parish's Volkswagen and identified the driver.

"They asked him to get out of the vehicle but he put it into gear and accelerated towards the police vehicle. The police made tactical contact to stop the vehicle."

He was breathalysed and blew a sample of 60mg in 100ml of breath.

Mr Birmingham said Parish has 30 previous convictions for a range of offences including battery, harassment, drink driving and arson.

Brendan Reedy, defending, said: "He is at a loss to explain why he behaved in this manner. He had been alcohol and drug free for some time but like people people, they think they have mastered the demon and think they can drink socially. But that is obviously not the case."

He asked for Judge Peter Barrie to suspend any sentence handed to Parish.

However, Judge Barrie said: "A powerful case has been put forward that you have been making a real effort to stop drinking. But there are two features of this behaviour that trouble me. The first is that you used an iron bar as part of your assault. The second is that you got into your car and drove it into people."

He sentenced Parish to nine months in total and disqualified him from driving for four years.
