Darwin Shopping Centre in Shrewsbury teamed up with Shropshire Wildlife Trust to put on the event on Saturday.

The workshops took place in a unit at the shopping centre and also coincided with the launch of the RSPB’s annual Big Garden Birdwatch.

Families gathered to make their own bird nest boxes and treats to take away with them.

Lizzie Stuart, from Shropshire Wildlife Trust, helped to organise the event after being approached by staff at the shopping centre.

She said: “We had about 25 families take part on Saturday morning. It’s been really busy.

“We’ve also been talking about our projects and we are hoping to recruit some members.

“We’ve never done this before. We are hoping to raise our profile. Lots of people have gone away with membership forms.”

Members from the trust are hoping to come back to the shopping centre in February for National Nest Box Week.

Shropshire Wildlife Trust is one of 46 wildlife trusts working across the UK.

For more than 50 years it has worked with people to make Shropshire rich in wildlife and protect places for generations to come.

Its team of 45 staff is supported by 600 volunteers, who work together to help nature’s recovery.

The trust runs a number of projects to protect wildlife and conserve wild places in the county.

It also runs activities for 11 to 25-year-olds.

The Wild Roots Youth Group meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month.

It also operates a weekly toddler group for under fives at The Cut Visitor Centre, Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury.
