Band of litter-pickers on a mission to clean up Shrewsbury

An army of litter-pickers will head out into the community this weekend with the aim of making Shrewsbury a better place to live.

The volunteers have joined together to form a group called Shrewsbury Litter Action Project (SLAP), led by founder Jill Bennett.

She said: "I've lived in Shrewsbury for the last 20 years and I've always gone out and picked up litter. I started seeing lots of other people doing the same so thought it would be good to form a group and do it together.

"There is a small army of people in Shrewsbury who want to make it a better and cleaner place to live. I know there's one man who has been doing the same area for the last 20 years. These people are amazing."

Shropshire Council and Shrewsbury Town Council are now supporting the group in their efforts and have donated litter-picking sticks and bin bags.

Jill, who litter-picks along Telford Way and down the canal path to Sundorne Sports Village about three times a week, started by picking up bottles while on her regular dog walk.

She is encouraging people to get involved by joining the group or heading out solo.

"If everyone did just a little bit, it would make a huge difference," she said. "If everyone picked up the litter they passed on their way to work or on a walk, it would reduce it massively.

"We all want to live in a nice place and don't want to be up to our knees in litter."

SLAP will next meet tomorrow at Mereside Community Centre at 2pm.
