Knitting for others in Shrewsbury
Members of a knit and natter group have turned their hobby into a way of raising money for good causes.

The group, based in Shrewsbury, produces hundreds of tiny knitted toys and cartoon characters and then uses them for charity tombolas to help benefit others in need.
It recently handed over a cheque for £1,000 to Hope House children’s hospice, money it raised via events last year. One of the members, Joan Whitbread, said she and three friends – Carol, Denny and Norma – met through their love of knitting.
“We decided to try to raise money for charity and chose Hope House last year,” she said. “This year we are fundraising for the Air Ambulance.”
They raise funds by attending shows and attractions and setting up a tombola stall.
“We only knit small animals and other items because children love them and because the tickets are only £1 each. The Minions are very popular,” Joan added.
The knitters go along to a special sew and stitch group at the Re:Creation cafe in the Riverside shopping centre in Shrewsbury every Thursday afternoon.
“We are always grateful for donations of wool and also to people who invite us to their event.”
