Shropshire Schools Sports and Athletics Association (SSSAA) received a £1,000 donation from Persimmon Homes West Midlands through its Community Champions project. Each month the housebuilder donates up to £1,000 each to two groups or individuals through the match-funded scheme.

The SSSAA held its John Beswick International Awards Evening recently at The Shirehall, in Shrewsbury.

Spokesman Mike Douch said: “Our aim is to recognise talented young people who have represented their country at sport during the preceding year, and who attend an affiliated school or college in Shropshire.

“The awards are an important part of the region’s sporting calendar and not only recognise achievement but honour talent and dedication. We are delighted that Persimmon Homes decided to support us in this way.

“We hope our awards encourage schools to look beyond the traditional approaches that can benefit talented, but often minority groups, and focus far more on improving practice and physical opportunities in new ways.”

Stephen Cleveley, director-in-charge for Persimmon Homes West Midlands, said: “We strongly believe in supporting the communities where we build, and are delighted to be able to help the Shropshire Schools Sports and Athletics Association in this way.

“If people were unsuccessful in their Community Champions application, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again this year and hopefully they will become our next recipient.”
