Since opening on April 1, 2014 more than 415,963 visitors have hot-footed to the gallery for a range of different events and exhibitions.

And the Stop.Cafe has served up nearly 100,000 slices of cake.

To celebrate the milestone, the public is invited to join staff and volunteers in The Square on Saturday between 11am and 3pm to help create a birthday cake.

Entry to the museum and art gallery will also be free on Saturday and Sunday.

Lezley Picton, Shropshire Council Cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “I can’t believe that it has already been five years since Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery opened. The time has flown by.

Talent

“During this time we have welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors to the museum and last year had our first service strategy approved so the future is extremely bright for our wonderful county museum.

“I’m delighted that we are able to offer free entry to people in celebration of this anniversary and hope to see lots of you there!”

Over the past five years Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery has held 36 special exhibitions including Lego, vikings and secret Egypt.

The popular teddy bear exhibition is currently on display where there is a chance to meet iconic bears like Winnie the Pooh and Paddington bear.

Fay Bailey, Shropshire Museum’s service manager, said: “We’re delighted to have welcomed so many visitors over the last five years. We’re celebrating five years with a packed programme of workshops, films, exhibitions and events for 2019 which showcase Shropshire’s talented artists and makers.”
