Derek Leslie Wills, 78, of Buttington Road, died on April 16.
An inquest at a Shirehall on Thursday heard how he lived alone and had a history of alcohol abuse.
A neighbour had heard a noise from his home address and found Mr Wills at the bottom of the stairs.
He was taken to hospital with a fractured spine, and successfully underwent surgery at Oswestry Orthopaedic Hospital.
His condition then got worse and he was sent to the Severn Hospice for end of life care.
Mr Wills died on April 16 at 6.10pm.
Coroner John Ellery recorded a conclusion of accidental death.
