Pride Hill roadworks due to finish this week after more than a year of disruption
Roadworks which have plagued a town centre street on and off for more than a year will be completed by the end of the week.
Shropshire Council has said Pride Hill in Shrewsbury will be free of major works by close of play on Friday.
Forming part of the £12 million Shrewsbury Integrated Transport Package, barriers were first set up on the town's main shopping route in April 2018 and were expected to be completed by November last year.
By June the work, which was being carried out by contractors Casey, had come to a halt and serious concerns were raised by the town's MP Daniel Kawczynski, who complained that areas outside shops had been dug up and just left.
After a meeting with senior bosses, the company ensured Mr Kawczynski that the work would be sped up after he visited the site and saw a solitary workman.
But then in October, the leader of Shropshire Council Peter Nutting revealed the work would not hit the deadline and would be stopped before Christmas to encourage trade.
He also said Casey would be removed from the project and that the council would seek a new contractor to re-start the work in early 2019.
Telford company, McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd, took over on February 4.
The authority said the works were progressing well in April and believed it would be completed by June.
Matt Johnson, executive manager for strategic projects, highways and transportation, has now confirmed that the last section will be finished today and all materials will be removed by Friday.
He said: "The paving on Pride Hill is 98 per cent complete, only one small section is remaining, approximately 5m x 2m, along the right hand side, adjacent to Pret a Manger. This is anticipated to be completed by close of play today.
"Any materials and traffic management will be de-mobilised and cleared by close of play Friday."
The lengthy works has seen the old red bricks pulled up and new York stone and granite setts laid in their place.
Mr Johnson also confirmed that the first stage of works to High Street has been completed and will re-commence in early 2020 for package 2.
