The benefice of Westbury, Worthen and Yockleton will ask residents to gather in their gardens for traditional afternoon tea.

A statement from the benefice said: "The national 75 year celebration of VE Day on Friday, May 8, 2020, may have been cancelled, but we don’t want this moment to pass without celebration, and therefore we are calling on everyone in the benefice of Westbury, Worthen and Yockleton to set an example to the nation, and join together whilst in the comfort and safety of your own garden.

"Firstly, at 3pm there will be the ‘nation’s toast to the heroes of World War Two’. This is a national call to stand up and raise a glass of refreshment of their choice and undertake the following toast: 'to those who gave so much, we thank you.'

"Secondly, we are suggesting lifting the lid on our lock down gloom by enjoying a traditional British afternoon tea at 4pm.

"We can still see our neighbours doing the same and salute them, we can dress in period clothes and just have a good time."
