About 30 of the appliances have so far been delivered in the Shrewsbury area by organisers from the Shropshire People Helping One Another(SPHOA) social media group which was set up to foster community support.

The members launched a fundraising appeal after learning of the efforts of Dr Adrian Heald who launched an initiative to provide slow cookers to food bank users so they can provide meals such as stews without using vast amounts of electricity.

Dave Burns, of SPHOA, said: “The group was set up when the floods came earlier this year when people asking asking for help with clearing up and odd jobs. Since then it has grown to more than 400 members we believe really because a lot people are on their own.

“It’s all about being a group and helping others especially in the area of food and fuel poverty.

“We really liked the idea so after contacting Barnabus Community services and Shrewsbury Ark to see if they would accept and pass on to their clients slow cookers we decided to become pro-active.

“Many groups across the country are taking part in the scheme.”
