Charles Darwin festival attracts global audience
A festival celebrating Shrewsbury's most famous son, Charles Darwin, attracted interest from across the globe.
The DarwIN Shrewsbury Festival was held virtually this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but there was still plenty of interest in the programme.
The nine-day festival involved a series of discussions, presentations and film screenings from the world of science as well as a toast to Darwin on his birthday. Anyone who may have missed out, or just wants to see the events again, can still view them online.
Partners of the festival included Shrewsbury School, Shropshire Wildlife Trust, Shropshire Museums Service, Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings, The Royal Society of Biology and Shrewsbury BID, which coordinated the event.
Stuart Cowper, head of partnership and community engagement at Shrewsbury School, said: “The DarwIN Shrewsbury Festival once again proved to be an amazing success - even though we had to go virtual this year because of the ongoing pandemic.
“We saw 554 sign-ups overall with people joining in from the USA, Ecuador, Denmark, Russia, Switzerland and Turkey, giving the festival a real international feel.
“The level of interest just goes to show how much Charles Darwin and his work is revered around the world.”
Emma Molyneux, of Shrewsbury BID which coordinated the festival, added: “We would like to thank all of those who participated by logging onto the events, the people who gave the lectures and everyone whose hard work made the festival possible.”
