'Off the scale' Shrewsbury drink driver who crashed into petrol pump banned for three years
A Shrewsbury drink driver who was almost six times the legal alcohol limit when he crashed into a petrol pump before falling unconscious in a police car has been banned from the road for three years.
Robert Cairns, 62, of Chelsea Court, Pountney Gardens, Belle Vue Road, was found guilty of drink-driving in his absence in June this year.
He had been convicted after giving a positive road-side breath test.
Telford Magistrates Court was told on Wednesday that Cairns, who is unemployed, had been arrested on February 6, 2022, after the manager of a petrol station in Meole Brace called the police.
Lisa Morris-Jones, prosecuting, told magistrates that Cairns was in a Peugeot Expert van at around 10pm when the owner of the BP petrol station - now Esso - on Hereford Road saw him drive into one of the petrol pumps.
"The manager of the petrol station was on the forecourt and noticed a blue Peugeot van move slowly forward," she said.
