Mary Webb Society members said they were “shocked and saddened” to learn that their president, Dr Gladys Mary Coles, died suddenly last month at the age of 89.
Dr Coles passed away on October 7 and was the leading biographer of Mary Webb, the Shropshire author and poet of the early 20th century, and a lifelong champion of this writer’s life and works.
A proud Liverpudlian born in Everton, living on the Wirral, Gladys Mary was a lecturer in creative writing, also an accomplished artist and gifted poet and novelist.
Spending much of WW11 in Wales gave her a deep love of that country. She died after having enjoyed a writers’ workshop in Wales with friends.
