The organisation - supported by a local restaurant - was taking part in the UK’s biggest online match-funding campaign, The Big Give Christmas Challenge, which gave supporters the chance to have their donation doubled for free between December 3 and December 10.
Town centre restaurant CSONS, which has of the charity’s fundraising food events showcasing sustainable, locally grown and nutritional cuisine, also helped to promote their campaign ‘Kitchen Gardens for Nutrition in Kenya’.
The charity aimed to raise £30,000 to support families in food poverty in Baringo County, Kenya via their Big Give page.
Today (December 10), is the last day people can donate and the target has already been exceeded. At the time of writing, they have raised £31,680 for families in food poverty in Baringo County, Kenya.
Within this largely rural and semi-arid region, young people and female-headed households are the most affected. Low agricultural productivity has resulted in frequent food and nutrition insecurity, causing high rates of stunting among children.
The Shrewsbury’s charity’s fundraising will go towards mother to mother support groups teaching about maternal infant and child nutrition; cone-shaped kitchen gardens and poultry rearing initiatives; drought tolerant seeds and seedlings and farmer schools to educate people on the best way to create strong harvests and minimise losses.
