Owners of The Shrewsbury Club, venue of the Budgen W100 tournament, have lodged an outline application to build a hotel at the Sundorne Road site.

Last year's ladies singles and doubles in Shrewsbury was won by Czech star Marketa Vondrousova, who went on to win Wimbledon this year.

The 2023 tournament is currently underway, with finals taking place this Sunday, October 22. Britain's former US Open champion Emma Raducanu has previously appeared at the Shropshire competition. Brits including Harriet Dart and Katie Swan are involved this year.

According to a planning statement, the hotel would be three/four storeys high and built on land where there is currently a car park and some trees. The owners insist it represents a "significant investment in Shrewsbury".
