Oteley Road speed bump lowering works 'have to wait'
Work to lower new speed bumps on a road on the outskirts of Shrewsbury won’t happen until they can be scheduled to fit in with existing planned roadworks.
In February, Shropshire Council announced that developers working on Oteley Road had agreed to urgently review three raised plateaus after the authority quizzed them on why they were higher than had been agreed.
The issue came to light after Shropshire Council received a number of calls and complaints from drivers about the plateaus – a type of speed bump which aims to reduce the speed of traffic.
Today, the council said work to lower the speed bumps, as well as other remedial works, would have to be co-ordinated with others in the area.
Tim Sneddon, environmental maintenance manager for Shropshire Council, said: “The recent works on Oteley Road have now been subject to a road safety audit which was undertaken by an independent auditing team.
“A number of problems and hazards were identified including, among other things, issues regarding the level of the raised plateaus, the road surface, drainage, signing and quality of work.
“We are currently agreeing with the developer the scope and programming of the remedial works, as these works have to be co-ordinated with other works in the area.”
Since the issue was identified, an advisory 20mph speed limit has been put in place to encourage drivers to slow down when approaching the speed bumps.
The work currently taking place along Oteley Road (the B4380) includes the installation of a new pedestrian crossing point and the raised plateaus.
These works are developer-led and are being delivered in association with the proposed Shrewsbury South Sustainable Urban Extension (SUE).
