New ropes for 132-year-old Bridgnorth Cliff Railway

Bridgnorth Cliff Railway is due to reopen on Thursday after being closed for two days for new ropes to be installed at the funicular train.

The Railway, has been hauling passengers from Low Town to High Town for the last 132 years.

But owner, Mr Malvern Tipping said the attraction will be using a new design of rope for both the balance and the haulage ropes, which wer installed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

He said: “The cliff railway carriages are used to haul the ropes up the tracks, as they are unwound from giant cotton reels, and before the old ropes are removed.

“This methodology, devised by the cliff railway’s former general manager Chris Preece, saves a great deal of work. Previously, the ropes had been hauled manually, which was not only very time consuming, but also very tiring work.

“The new methodology is also a great improvement from a health and safety perspective.”

He added that the work was being undertaken by Tensology of Doncaster, specialists in ropeways for funicular railways, mines and cranes.
