The tree in the centre of Ludlow is set to be saved as local businesses have rallied round to help.

A spokesperson for Ludlow Town Council said: “Thanks to the support of local businesses, it is planned to re-cut the base of the tree and put it back up on Monday - this plan assumes there is no further damage to the structure of the tree - and this will be fully assessed on Monday.”

Ludlow councillor Andy Boddington said the storm created 'havoc'.

“The storm has snapped the Christmas tree in the market square at its base,” he wrote on social media.

The storm also had a chilling effect on the market where only one stall was open so close to Christmas.

Councillor Boddington said: “The fruit and veg stall was open when I visited the market at 10am. The other stalls were empty.

“So close to Christmas, this is a real blow for traders.”
