Great War exhibition in Bishop's Castle

A major exhibition is being held in Bishop's Castle to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice which brought to an end the bloodshed of the Great War.

The exhibition, called 1914-18, The Great War for Civilisation, is on September 22 and 23 and has been organised by local historians David and Janet Preshous, with South West Shropshire Historical & Archaeological Society. It is at the Cadet Hall in New Street from 10am to 5pm, and will be part of the town's Michaelmas Fair.

Mrs Preshous said: "It will include a great many photographs and historical sketches, with artifacts, memorabilia, local memorials and the letters and biographies of local servicemen and women.

"As well as the emphasis on local involvement, the display will include items on the war in the air and at sea, and reference to the wider international context, including the Russian Revolution, the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland, and the role of the Suffragettes.

"We have had a great deal of help from local families."

Admission is £2 or free with a Michaelmas Fair wristband. Proceeds are going to the fair – the Michaelmas Fair is on the Saturday only, the exhibition is on both weekend days – and the Royal British Legion.
