Arriva Trains Wales said its service from Crewe to Swansea was running at least 14 minutes late following the incident.

The 9.14am service from Crewe was hit by the delays in the Church Stretton to Craven Arms part of the journey.

A statement on the Arriva Trains Wales website said: "9.14am Crewe to Swansea due 2.25pm has been delayed between Church Stretton and Craven Arms and is now 14 minutes late.

"This is due to animals on the railway."

Hannah McCarthy, media relations manager at Network Rail, said: "The delay was caused by some sheep which had got through a fence and found their way on to the railway track. The sheep have all been removed from the railway now and no sheep were harmed.

"The incident did cause some delays to services, but services are now running normally and the fence is being repaired."

The service was expected to arrive at Swansea shortly before 2.40pm.
