New walking paths on offer at centre
Walkers and ramblers in south Shropshire will be able to stride out on a number of new walks thanks to funding from a number of sources.
Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre has refreshed its circular walks leaflets. Grow Cook Learn, a local charity now running the visitor centre, secured funding from the Shropshire Hills AONB Conservation Fund, MFG solicitors and Craven Arms Community Food Initiative Fund earlier in the year to increase their walks offer from four leaflets to six, including new routes and improving the existing ones.
The walks, including the Riverside Ramble and Wart Hill Wander have been enjoyed by visitors and locals for many years and will now feature new routes as well as the improved existing ones, enabling visitors to enjoy the Shropshire Hills surrounding the Craven Arms area. The leaflets went on sale on last week and they are available to buy from the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre gift shop from 10am-5pm every day.
Leaflet designer, Mike Ashton along with local councillor, volunteer testers and sponsors joined the staff and board members at the centre for a guided walk of the Riverside Ramble to celebrate the project and the leaflets now being on sale.
The funding also supported the design of a brand new wall map is now featured in the centre and includes all of the routes in an overview of the area.
Jade Marriott-Lodge, marketing and development manager at Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre said: “A lot of time and hard work has gone in to the planning and walking of the routes over the last few months and we are really excited to now be launching them for sale. All of the walks start and end here at the centre where we have free parking and a licensed café serving delicious food so it’s a great place to start your exploration of the local landscape.”
Entry to the Discovery Centre and Onny Meadows is free but there is a charge for visitors to visit the Shropshire Hills Through Time exhibition and see the mammoth.
The Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre offers an extensive programme of family events, adult courses and a variety of activities for the whole family. The unique grass roofed building houses a replica of the famous mammoth skeleton found in Shropshire. There is also a café and gift shop.
