The news comes after more than 800 people signed a petition calling for increased safety measures outside Ludlow Infant and Nursery School.

MP for Ludlow Philip Dunne met with headteacher Val Matthew after the issue was brought to his attention, and has written to the chief executive of Shropshire Council Clive Wright.

Now Shropshire Council has said work has started on developing a design for appropriate safety measures, subject to funds being available.

Steve Davenport, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We are aware of the situation relating to the school crossing patrol site on Sandpits Road, outside the entrance to Ludlow Infant School.

"On this basis, work has commenced on developing a design for appropriate highway measures to improve the safety of pupils crossing the road in the vicinity of the school.

"At the current time, it is planned that works will commence on site in 2019, subject to budget availability.”

The petition calls for increased and improved signage, the speed limit reduced to 20mph, zig zag lines repainted and the appointment of a lollypop lady/man or a pedestrian crossing.
