HMP Featherstone inmate dies in hospital

An inmate has died after collapsing in HMP Featherstone.

43-year-old prisoner Mark Palfreyman died at New Cross Hospital yesterday after collapsing in the prison.

Palfreyman, of Atherstone, Warwickshire, had been sentenced to two years and four months in prison in May this year after pleading guilty to a robbery in Nuneaton in March in which a woman was injured.

West Midlands Ambulance service confirmed it was called to the prison, based on New Road, Featherstone, Wolverhampton, at 9am yesterday.

Two ambulances were sent to the scene and one took the man to New Cross Hospital for treatment at 9.49am.

The man was later pronounced dead at hospital.

West Midlands Police were then called to attend the prison at 11am.

The police have confirmed that an investigation is now under way.

A prison service spokesperson said: “HMP Featherstone prisoner Mark Palfreyman died in custody on Thursday, August 31.

“As with all deaths in custody there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”
