A council has said they will not be looking to adopt a phone box which hundreds of campaigners have come together to save.

The phone box in Streetly had been marked by current owners BT for removal, but resident Anne-Marie Goodchild saw an opportunity to reclaim and reinvent it.

After posting about it on social media, Anne-Marie found that there was a lot of support from local residents who want to see it reused as a book swap, community noticeboard or defibrillator location.

Jennifer Gray, who runs “Streetly Community Group” on Facebook, set up a petition to garner local support.

Alongside Anne-Marie, she plans to present this to Staffordshire County Council, and ask them to adopt the phone box for £1.

But the authority has said it is "not something the county council would be looking to adopt at this time".

Helen Fisher, cabinet member for highways and transport at Staffordshire County Council said: “Such a facility would be a local community asset and not something the county council would be looking to adopt at this time.

"However, our highways team would be happy to provide advice to the community on how the box could be used safely within the highway network.”
