Thousands turn out for 70th Eccleshall Show

Early estimates suggest this year's 70th Eccleshall Show has been the biggest in its history, with more people attending and more money being raised for charity than ever before.

Taking place on Saturday in a field in Sugnall, near Eccleshall, Stafford, the days events included everything from dog agility to vegetable competitions.

There was a classic car show featuring around 350 cars and commercial vehicles, which ran alongside a packed programme of events, a huge craft and horticultural tent with 135 competitions and more than 60 trade stands.

Last year's show saw rain from start to finish but there was no such bad luck this time, with the sun blazing down on all those who attended.

One of the event's organiser, Sheila Kettle, told the Express & Star: "There was a big equestrian centre including show jumping, a massive classic car show and the main ring. In the ring we had a full programme of events including dog agility, children's sports, Lichfield flyball dog display team and Dave Ross of Betley Court Gundogs. On top of this we had about 65 trade stands and a massive tent for competitions. There were 135 competitions in there ranging from vegetables to photography.

"The WI had a great big tent where they were selling tea, coffee, cakes etc. It was so popular they had completely sold out by 4pm.

"The show had something for everybody, we are absolutely delighted with how it went."

Final takings for the show will be counted in the coming days, with organisers deciding at an AGM later this year which charities to donate the money to.

Chairman of the show's group, Edward Lambert, said: "Early indications are that it has been a record breaker. We have not got the final figures yet but we are very optimistic. Feedback on the day and since has been great.

"We will absolutely be back for next year for the 71st year. Plans are already in place and we really look forward to it."
