The fire broke out in a first floor bedroom of the property above shops on Dawley Road in the Arleston area.

Three engines were sent to the scene from Telford Central Fire Station and Wellington, taking the aerial ladder platform, which is used to battle fires higher up in buildings.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were able to put out the blaze using hoses within about half an hour.

The residents were a family but had escaped the building when fire crews had arrived.

Watch manager of Wellington Fire Station, John Pritchard, said: "We turned up to the domestic flat on fire. On arrival, flames were seen coming from the first floor building of the property.

"We committed four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets and three crews were in attendance. It took about 20 minutes to get the fire under control and it is still being investigated.

"It appears the cause of the fire is not suspicious."

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene but West Midlands Ambulance Service said that no patients needed treatment.

Sidhu Newsagents shopkeeper Joga Sidhu, who works in the row of shops below the block where it happened, said: "I wasn't here when it happened but my wife told me the fire started out the back and it was very bad."
