Gary Neville in Telford as he watches Salford City take on the Bucks
Manchester United and England legend Gary Neville paid a visit to the county to cheer on the football club he co-owns.
The Champions League and Premier League-winning former defender was at the New Bucks Head on Saturday to watch his Salford City side beat AFC Telford 2-0, before commentating on his old side’s Premier League opener against West Ham yesterday for Sky Sports.
Neville spent his entire playing career at Old Trafford – known as the Theatre of Dreams. At the time of his retirement in 2011, he was Manchester United’s second longest serving player in the squad, behind long-time team-mate Ryan Giggs, and had served as club captain for five years. He is one of the most decorated English and European footballers of all time, having won a total of 20 trophies, including eight Premier League titles and two Champions League titles.
Gary co-owns Salford City with fellow former Manchester United stars Ryan Giggs, brother Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.
Since their takeover, the club has risen through the non-league ranks, with this the club’s second season in the National League North division. Telford fan John Charles Leith wrote on Twitter: “Seen today the joint owner of Salford City, Gary Neville, at AFC TU watching his side beat Telford two nil. He stood with the away fans.”
Salford ran out comfortable winners of the match thanks to goals from Jake Beesley and Mike Phenix. Since retiring, Neville has won a new army of fans thanks to his no-nonsense style of punditry on Sky Sports.
